Game Story: Golden Rams Fall 70-52 to Dakota Tech

The Anoka-Ramsey Community College Men's Basketball team fell to 5-2 on the season with a 70-52 loss to Dakota County Tech on Wednesday night in St. Paul.

After taking an early 5-0 lead, things quickly fell apart for the Golden Rams as Dakota Tech took control midway through the half and eventually built a 37-24 lead by halftime.

Things didn't change much in the second half as the Golden Rams were never able to push the deficit below eight points.

While Dakota Tech was held to just 33.8% shooting, it was offset by the 28 offensive rebounds they hauled in compared to just 14 for the Golden Rams.

Anoka-Ramsey was outshot 74-49 in field goal attempts due to both the offensive rebound discrepancy and also the 25 turnovers committed by the Golden Rams.

Jon Conner scored ten points, Montez Wilkerson and Perri Vaden had nine apiece, and Joe Lyons chipped in with eight off the bench.

The Golden Rams are at home the next two weekends.

On Friday, December 7th they take on Vermilion Community College at 8:00pm.  Vermilion comes in ranked #3 in the latest NJCAA Division III national poll.  Then on Saturday, Anoka-Ramsey hosts Mesabi Range at 3:00pm.

The Golden Rams will host the ARCC Classic on December 14-15 as well with both men's and women's teams.  A schedule of games will appear on the blog early next week.

Game Stories: Golden Rams Split Weekend Games

The Anoka-Ramsey Community College Men's Basketball team split their two weekend road games on Friday and Saturday, first falling 81-79 to Central Lakes, then posting a 74-47 victory over Fond du Lac.

Against Central Lakes, first half turnovers and second half defensive lapses were too much to overcome.

The Golden Rams committed 15 turnovers in the first half before settling down and only turning the ball over four times in the second half.  Despite all the turnovers, Central Lakes only lead 37-33 at the break.

The tough defense that allowed Anoka-Ramsey to remain close in the first half faltered in the second half as Central Lakes was able to build an early 11 point lead 54-43.

Trailing by ten with four minutes left, Anoka-Ramsey was able to get some key defensive stops, and hit some big shots to cut the deficit to two with 20 seconds left.

After a timeout, the Golden Rams were not able to get a clear look and missed a contested three-point shot with about five seconds remaining to drop their first game of the season.

The Golden Rams shot 50.8% for the game but allowed Central Lakes to shoot 51.6% including 63.3% in the second half alone.

Montez Wilkerson led Anoka-Ramsey with 18 points, followed by Lucas Barraud with 16, Joe Lyons with 13, and Jon Conner with 11.

On Saturday, Anoka-Ramsey bounced back in a big way against Fond du Lac, primarily on the defensive end.

After trailing 3-0 to start the game, the Golden Rams took control from there, forcing Fond du Lac into just 24.2% shooting in the half including 2-15 from the three-point line to take a 38-23 lead into halftime.

The inside play of the Golden Rams was too much for Fond du Lac as big men Henry Breedlove, Blake Williams, and Matt Lanier either scored or were fouled near the basket.

The second half was more of the same as Anoka-Ramsey held Fond du Lac to just three points and one field goal in the first 11 minutes of the half in building a 64-29 lead with six minutes remaining.

The Golden Rams shot 42.9% for the game and held Fond du Lac to 27 percent.  Anoka-Ramsey held a 56-36 edge in rebounds and made 18 free throws to Fond du Lac's eight.

Breedlove led the way with 13 points and nine rebounds.  Williams scored ten points and had seven rebounds.  Lanier chipped in with nine points on 3-5 shooting and 3-3 from the free throw line.

The Golden Rams are now 5-1 on the season.

Next, Anoka-Ramsey travels to St. Paul to face Dakota County Technical College on Wednesday, December 5th at 7:00pm at the St. Paul Salvation Army.

That game is followed by two home games on Friday, December 7th at 8:00pm against nationally ranked Vermilion, then Mesabi Range on Saturday at 3:00pm.

Game Story: Golden Rams Defeat Fox Valley 93-56

The Anoka-Ramsey Community College Men's Basketball team put together an impressive performance in defeating the Fox Valley Technical College Foxes on Saturday afternoon.

After falling behind 6-0 in the first three minutes, the Golden Rams took control with a 12-0 run and never looked back, building a lead that would stretch as high as 40 points.

Anoka-Ramsey overcame the slow start by putting together their best defensive performance of the season after those first three minutes.

Fox Valley finished the first half shooting just 32.3% after hitting two of their first three shots.  The Golden Rams entered the break with a 46-27 lead after a Fox Valley player hit an 85-foot shot at the first half buzzer.

The second half was more of the same as Anoka-Ramsey held Fox Valley to just 24.4% shooting in the final period.

The Golden Rams finished the game shooting 47.9% overall including 10-31 from the three-point line.  This was the third time in their first four games hitting at least ten three-point field goals.

Anoka-Ramsey held a 56-39 edge on the boards and dished out a season-high 17 assists led by Perri Vaden's seven.

Montez Wilkerson led the Golden Rams in scoring for the fourth straight game with 18 points on 7-14 shooting to go with seven rebounds.

Also in double figures scoring was Matt Lanier (12 points) and Lucas Barruad (11 points).

Game Story: Golden Rams Defeat Quakerdale Prep

The Anoka-Ramsey Community College Men's Basketball team remained undefeated with a win on Tuesday night over the Quakerdale Prep Eagles 86-76.

Defense was again a big key for the Golden Rams as it was in their previous game.

Quakerdale was held to just 37.7% shooting for the night including a 2-16 performance from the three-point line.

In the first half, Anoka-Ramsey held Quakerdale to just 35.3% from the field, however allowing eight offensive rebounds and committing seven turnovers kept the game close as Anoka-Ramsey led 36-30 at the break.

The Golden Rams opened a big lead early in the second half, going up by as many as 19 at one point, but the Eagles wouldn't go away quietly.

The Anoka-Ramsey lead was trimmed to as little as four points late in the game, but some key defensive stops and 12-16 free throw shooting in the second half kept Quakerdale at bay.

The Golden Rams held a 47-43 rebounding edge against the taller Eagles and knocked down eight three-point field goals compared to just two for Quakerdale.

Montez Wilkerson led the team in scoring with a game-high 23 points on 7-14 shooting including 4-9 from the three-point line.  Wilkerson also pulled down six rebounds.

Perri Vaden led the charge on the boards with a game-high 13 rebounds including four on the offensive end to go with seven points.

Sam Willis scored 13 points on 5-8 shooting off the bench.

Lucas Barraud and Jon Conner each tallied 12 points.

Brian Sarvela contributed six points on 3-3 shooting and five rebounds, four on the offensive end.

Game Story: Defense Propels Team to Win

Defense was the key for the Anoka-Ramsey Community College Men's Basketball team in their defeat of host Milwaukee Area Technical College on Saturday afternoon, 70-61.

In a game that had both teams put up large runs, the Golden Rams were able to string together late defensive stops to pull away.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair with neither team able to gain control.  Anoka-Ramsey entered the halftime break with a 33-31 lead thanks to a strong start by Montez Wilkerson who scored 11 of the Golden Rams' first 14 points with three three-point field goals, continuing his hot shooting from the previous night.

The Golden Rams put together a 8-0 run to start the second half taking their first double-digit lead at 41-31.  However, Milwaukee immediately countered with a 13-0 run of their own to take a 44-41 lead.

From there it was again back-and-forth until a late switch to zone defense enabled the Golden Rams to stifle the inside scoring of Milwaukee and pull away.

The Golden Rams held Milwaukee to just 38.3% shooting on the night including 31.8% from the three-point line.  Anoka-Ramsey also forced 25 turnovers including 10 steals and outrebounded the Stormers 48-38 on the night.

Wilkerson led Anoka-Ramsey with 24 points on 5-11 shooting from the three-point line.  Wilkerson also had a game-high nine rebounds.

Henry Breedlove scored nine points on 2-2 from the field and 5-7 from the free throw line to go with seven rebounds.

Lucas Barraud tallied six points, six rebounds, and four assists.

All 13 players who played scored at least one point for the Golden Rams.

Anoka-Ramsey improves to 2-0 on the season.  Next up is the first home game of the season on Tuesday, November 20th at 6:00pm vs. Quakerdale Prep.

Game Story: Golden Rams Open Season with Win

The Anoka-Ramsey Community College Men's Basketball team opened the 2012-2013 campaign with a thrilling come-from-behind win over the Madison College Wolfpack in the Milwaukee Area Technical College Classic on Friday evening.

The Golden Rams trailed 66-57 with about four minutes remaining before going on a 9-0 run to tie the score, thanks to consecutive three-point field goals by sophomore Jon Conner.

Anoka-Ramsey led 74-70 with about a minute remaining.  Two free throws by Madison cut the lead to just two, 74-72.

Freshman Perri Vaden made one of two free throws to increase the lead to 75-72.  On the ensuing possession, the Golden Rams fouled a Madison three-point shooter with 6.8 seconds left.

After Madison made the first free throw, the Golden Rams called a timeout.  Two made free-throws later, and a 75-75 tie, Anoka-Ramsey quickly inbounded the ball to sophomore Lucas Barraud who went the length of the floor, sinking a semi-contested layup with 1.2 seconds left for the final margin.

The Golden Rams were led by the hot shooting of freshman Montez Wilkerson who tallied 34 points on 8-11 from the three-point line.  Wilkerson notched 20 of his 34 points in the second half.

Vaden finished with ten points and a team-high six rebounds.

Barraud tallied ten points; and Conner finished with nine on 3-7 shooting from three to go with four assists.

The Golden Rams shot 15-34 (44.1%) from the three-point line and forced 23 Madison turnovers.

Game Recap: Big 2nd Half Leads to Victory in Season Finale

The Anoka-Ramsey Community College Men's Basketball team concluded their season with a victory in the 3rd place game of the MCAC/Region XIII tournament on Sunday afternoon.  The Golden Rams defeated Rochester 83-56 after previously falling to Central Lakes in the semifinal game the night before.
It was a tale of two halves offensively for the Golden Rams.  In a first half that saw neither team shoot the ball well, the Golden Rams big second half led to the win.

Neither team could find a rhythm on offense in the opening period as both teams shot below 30 percent for the half with Anoka-Ramsey taking a slight 27-26 lead into the break.

The second half saw an explosion of offense for Anoka-Ramsey, and the same stingy defense that came to define the team this season.

A quick burst to start the half propelled the Golden Rams to a double digit lead early in the half.  Combined with an effective zone defense, Anoka-Ramsey outscored Rochester 56-30 in half number two.

The Golden Rams pushed their lead to 20 for the first time with six minutes remaining and Rochester was never able to get the deficit back under 12 for the remainder of the game.

Anoka-Ramsey shot 66.7 percent (20-30) in the second half to finish at 46.3 percent (31-67).  Rochester managed just 28.2 percent for the game (20-71).

The Golden Rams held a 53-45 edge in rebounds and made nine three point field goals compared to just three for Rochester.

Five players scored in double figures for Anoka-Ramsey.  Lucas Barraud finished with a career-high 19 points on 6-13 shooting and 5-5 from the free throw line.

Michael Stephens scored a career-high 16 points on 6-12 shooting.

Lemuel Doe finished with 12 points and eight rebounds.

David Hicks and J.J. Butler rounded out the double-figure scorers with ten points apiece.

Jimmy Sauser scored eight points and pulled in a career-high eight rebounds.

Henry Breedlove led the Golden Rams with 11 rebounds.

Anoka-Ramsey finishes the season with a 22-8 overall record.  It's the second year in a row the Golden Rams finished 22-8.

Game Recap: Golden Rams Advance to Semifinals

The Anoka-Ramsey Community College Men's Basketball team advanced to the semifinals of the MCAC/Region XIII tournament with a 73-61 victory over Hibbing Community College.

A poor shooting (or good defensive) first half saw neither team take control as Anoka-Ramsey led just 25-23 at the break after a last second jumper by Michael Stephens.

In the second half, the Golden Rams put together an early run thanks to the three-point shooting of J.J. Butler and Lemuel Doe.

Each hit threes early in the half as Anoka-Ramsey built a 12 point lead with about six minutes remaining.  Hibbing put together a short run to keep things close but were never able to get within striking distance.

Anoka-Ramsey shot just 37.3 percent for the game but held Hibbing to 35 percent.  The Golden Rams made seven three-point shots in the second half and made 22 free throws to just 14 for Hibbing.

Anoka-Ramsey also held a 46-41 edge in rebounds.

Doe finished with 22 points on 4 of 9 shooting and 11 of 12 from the free throw line.

Butler finished with 20 points (18 in the second half) including 4 of 8 from the three point line and six rebounds.

Chris Harmon tallied 16 points and seven rebounds.

Game Recap: Golden Rams Defeat DCTC

The Anoka-Ramsey Community College Men's Basketball team finished the 2011-2012 regular season with a 71-67 victory over Dakota County Technical College.  DCTC came into the game with a 22-5 record and #8 ranking in NJCAA Division II.

The physcial game featured a fairly low-scoring first half with both teams suffering long droughts.  The game was tied 23-23 before DCTC finished with half on a 12-3 run to take a 35-26 lead into the break.

The Golden Rams started the second half with two three-point shots from Lemuel Doe and one from David Hicks to get back into the game and it was back and forth from there.

DCTC was able to build the lead back up to nine with about nine minutes to play, but the Golden Rams didn't quit.

A series of good offensive plays and stingy defense allowed Anoka-Ramsey to tie the game 63-63 with about two minutes to play.

A transition jumper by Lucas Barraud from the right corner gave Anoka-Ramsey a 65-63 lead they wouldn't relinquish.  Anoka-Ramsey took a two possession lead, however two fouls on three-point attempts gave DCTC a chance to keep things close, but they only converted two of those six foul shots.

Clutch free-throw shooting by Hicks in the closing minute kept DCTC at bay.

The Golden Rams held DCTC to 34.9 percent shooting while shooting 51.1 percent themselves including an impressive 66.7 percent in the second half (16-24).

Doe finished with a game-high 20 points, 12 in the first half to go along with five rebounds, three assists, and three steals in only 25 minutes of play due to foul trouble.

J.J. Butler finished with 14 points with a clutch three-point shot during Anoka-Ramsey's key run.  Butler also had five rebounds.

Hicks finished with ten points and five rebounds going 5-7 from the free-throw line.

Barraud also finished with ten points on 4-5 shooting.

Chris Harmon led the Golden Rams with eight rebounds.

Game Recap: Golden Rams Finish MCAC Play at 8-4

The Anoka-Ramsey Community College Men’s Basketball team defeated Ridgewater College 76-63 on Wednesday to wrap up MCAC Southern Division play with an 8-4 record.
The first half saw neither team come out of the gate quickly as Ridgewater’s zone defense limited Anoka-Ramsey’s opportunities inside, while the bigger Golden Rams didn’t allow much for shots on the interior for the Warriors.
The teams exchanged small leads throughout the first ten minutes of the game.
Despite the slow start, the Golden Rams were able to take control mid-way through the first half with a nine point run and went into the break with a 34-27 lead.
Anoka-Ramsey shot just 34.1 percent for the half including a dismal 4-19 from the three-point line.  However, Ridgewater didn’t fare much better shooting just 25.8 percent.
The Golden Rams were able to slowly pull away in the second half thanks to increased pressure defense and a greater emphasis on getting inside against the Warriors’ zone.
The lead swelled to as much as 20 before Ridgewater went on a run to cut the lead to just 11 with a minute and a half left.  That’s the closest the Warriors would get.
Anoka-Ramsey shot 52.8 percent in the second half to finish at 42.9 percent.  Ridgewater was held to 36.1 percent in the second half and finished shooting 31.3 percent.
Anoka-Ramsey had a commanding lead on the glass, outrebounding Ridgewater 52-43 and 19-15 in offensive rebounds despite shooting a higher percentage.
The Golden Rams also forced 16 turnovers while committing 14 themselves.
Guard David Hicks recorded his second double-double of the season with 13 points and ten rebounds.  He also led the team with five assists and four steals.
Chris Harmon led the Golden Rams in scoring with 16 points.

Details about the MCAC State Tournament will be posted on this site on Sunday, February 26th after the final conference games are played.

Game Recap: Anoka-Ramsey Wins Seventh Straight

The Anoka-Ramsey Men’s Basketball team overcame a slow start with a big second half to defeat Minnesota West 88-75 on Wednesday night.  It was the Golden Rams’ seventh straight victory after losing three straight early in the conference season.
Behind the hot shooting of guard Luke Roddy, Minnesota West jumped out to a ten point lead in the first half before Anoka-Ramsey went on a 10-0 run to tie the score late in the half.
Anoka-Ramsey briefly led by one point but a last second layup by Minnesota West allowed the Bluejays to go into the halftime break with a 36-35 lead.
Behind four three-pointers from Roddy, Minnesota West shot 56.5 percent in the first half, and held Anoka-Ramsey to just 44.8 percent.
Lemuel Doe and Chris Harmon paced the Golden Rams in the first have with 13 and 11 point respectively.
The second half showed a renewed effort on the defensive end from the Golden Rams as they quickly opened up a lead.  Gradually that lead increased to as much as 19 points with about four minutes remaining but Minnesota West wouldn’t go away quietly.
Behind more hot shooting from Roddy (who finished with eight made threes), the Bluejays connected on a few threes, got some timely turnovers and knocked down free throws to cut the Golden Ram lead to single digits with under a minute remaining.
But the Golden Rams held on with made free throws from Antone Darrington, Harmon, and Doe to seal the victory.
Anoka-Ramsey held Minnesota West to just 33.3 percent shooting in the second half as the Bluejays finished at 42.4 percent.
The Golden Rams shot 53.1 percent in the second half to finish at 49.2 percent for the game.
Anoka-Ramsey also held a 40-33 edge in rebounds.

It’s the second straight season the Golden Rams have knocked off a #1 ranked team on the road, beating Rochester last season.
A big first half propelled the Golden Rams to the victory as they led 39-24 at the break.
Lemuel Doe scored 19 of Anoka-Ramsey’s 39 first half points on his way to a game-high 23 points.
The Golden Rams shot 53.8 percent (14-26) in the half and held the Raiders to just 40 percent (10-25).
Central Lakes began the second half on a 9-0 run to pull within 39-33.  Anoka-Ramsey was able to stop the bleeding for a little while, but Central Lakes continued to chip away at the deficit, eventually tying the game midway through the half.
Anoka-Ramsey got some timely baskets from Chris Harmon and Corey Barrett inside and stepped up on the defensive end, contesting any three-point shot from the Raiders.
Harmon and Doe combined to knock down some timely free throws late in the game to hold off the Raiders final rally, allowing Anoka-Ramsey to hold on for the win.

Game Recap: Golden Rams Survive Two Overtimes

The Anoka-Ramsey Community College Men’s Basketball team survived two overtimes to defeat Western Technical College 87-83 on Monday night.  The win was the Golden Rams third straight after dropping their previous three.
Honestly, with 50 minutes of basketball there is no way to give an accurate recap of what happened.   Anoka-Ramsey hit some shots, Western hit some shots, both teams led at various times, and both teams had chances to win at the end of regulation and the first overtime.
Here are some statistics for the game.
Anoka-Ramsey led 40-33 at halftime after shooting 48.4 percent (15-31).
Anoka-Ramsey shot just 37.8 percent overall and just 30.2 percent in the second half.
Western Tech shot 41.4 percent (29-70) from the field including 12 of 27 from the three-point line.  The Golden Rams were 11-31 from behind the arc.

Balanced Scoring Propels Golden Rams to Win

The Anoka-Ramsey Community College Men’s Basketball team used a balanced scoring attack to defeat #10 Rochester Community and Technical College 75-73 on Wednesday evening.

The Golden Rams had six players score nine points or more, with five of those in double figures.
In an offensive filled first half, the teams traded leads, culminating in a 44-40 lead for Anoka-Ramsey at the break.
The 44 points are the four-highest first half total the Golden Rams have had this season, and the 40 points allowed were the third-most allowed in a first half this season.
Anoka-Ramsey shot 47.6 percent (20-42) compared to 47.2 percent (17-36) for Rochester.  Both teams took great care of the ball with the Golden Rams recording only six turnovers in the half and Rochester only committing four.
The Golden Rams out-rebounded Rochester 28-15 in the half including an 11-4 edge in offensive rebounds.  Anoka-Ramsey shot only one free throw and Rochester only attempted four in the half.
The second half was a different story, as both defenses picked up.
The Golden Rams only managed ten points in the first ten minutes of the second half, and fell behind 63-54.
Slowly, Anoka-Ramsey chipped away at the deficit and finally broke through on Lemuel Doe’s lone three-pointer of the game with about 25 seconds remaining, giving the Golden Rams a 74-73 lead.
Rochester called their final timeout to set up one last play, but a great defensive effort allowed only a contested perimeter shot with six seconds remaining.  The rebound went out of bounds off Rochester with three seconds left, and Chris Harmon was fouled on the inbounds pass.
Harmon made the first free throw, missed the second, and Rochester’s three-quarter court heave fell short.
Scoring double figures for the Golden Rams was J.J. Butler with 12, David Hicks and Michael Stephens with 11 (career-high for Stephens), and Corey Barrett and Harmon with ten apiece.  Lemuel Doe finished with nine.
Barrett led the team with ten rebounds, six on the offensive end.  Harmon pulled in seven rebounds, and Stephens recorded a career-high six rebounds.
Hicks chipped in five assists as well.
Anoka-Ramsey shot 41.1 percent from the field and out-rebounded Rochester 48-40 for the game.
The Golden Rams snapped a three game losing streak and improved to 12-6 on the season, 2-3 in the MCAC Southern Division.  They’ll finish up the first half of conference play at Ridgewater College on Saturday, January 28th at 3:00pm.

The Anoka-Ramsey Community College Men’s Basketball team shot a season-low 34 percent and tied a season-high with 26 turnovers, falling 74-55 to #1 ranked Central Lakes College on Wednesday evening.
The 26 turnovers were the most the Golden Rams committed since their first game of the season.  The 55 points scored were also a season-low.  The previous season-low of 63 points was also in the first game of the season.
The Golden Rams started out quick, scoring the first eight points of the game.  Central Lakes countered with a 14-3 run to take a 14-11 lead they would never relinquish.
After falling behind by double digits in the first half, the Golden Rams put together a run to keep the game close, trailing 36-29 at the break.  Anoka-Ramsey committed 14 turnovers in the half and shot 37 percent but held Central Lakes to only 38.5 percent.
Central Lakes capitalized on the Anoka-Ramsey miscues by scoring 17 points off turnovers in the first half, 29 points off turnovers overall for the game.
Anoka-Ramsey was able to keep things interesting for most of the second half, but some costly turnovers and missed shots allowed Central Lakes to push an eight point lead to 15 with about four minutes to play.

Defense Leads Golden Rams to MCAC Win

The Anoka-Ramsey Community College Men’s Basketball team used a stifling defense to defeat Riverland Community College 80-57 in their first MCAC Southern Division game of the 2011-2012 season on Wednesday night.
The first half started slow as neither team could find a rhythm offensively, but a short run near the end of the half pushed Anoka-Ramsey to a 29-21 lead at the break.
The Golden Rams held Riverland to just 30.8 percent shooting in the half while shooting 52 percent themselves.   However, eight first half turnovers allowed Riverland to stay close.
Anoka-Ramsey began to slowly pull away in the second half.  The Golden Rams held Riverland to just one field goal over the first six minutes, but Riverland converted eight free throws in that time to stay within striking distance.
The Golden Rams continued to get good shots on the offensive end, and pushed their lead to as many as 25 points.
Anoka-Ramsey shot 60 percent overall for the game (33 of 55) including 66.7 percent (20 of 30) in the second half.
Riverland managed just 24.2 percent shooting in the second half to finish 16 of 59 from the field for the game (27.1 percent).
Anoka-Ramsey held a 44-31 edge on the boards as well.
Lemuel Doe led the Golden Rams in scoring with 21 points on an efficient 7-8 shooting and 6-8 from the free throw line.  Doe also pulled in nine rebounds and dished out four assists.
David Hicks scored 12 points to go with six rebounds.
J.J. Butler finished with 12 points and Antone Darrington recorded ten points and six assists.
Corey Barrett had another solid game finishing with eight points and nine rebounds.
The Golden Rams push their record to 11-3 on the season, 1-0 in MCAC Southern Division play.  They’ll next travel to MSCTC-Fergus Falls on Saturday, January 14 for a 3:00pm tip.  MSCTC defeated Minnesota West on Wednesday night and is also 1-0 in conference play.

Game Recaps: Golden Rams Sweep North Dakota Schools

The Anoka-Ramsey Community College Men's Basketball team swept a pair of North Dakota schools over the weekend, first defeating United Tribes Technical College 74-52, then knocking off North Dakota State College of Science 82-81.

United Tribes

In Friday night's game, the Golden Rams came out sluggish on both ends of the floor.  Poor shooting by both teams resulted in a low-scoring affair in the first half with Anoka-Ramsey clinging to a 29-27 lead at the break.

The Golden Rams only shot 35.5 percent from the field, but were able to hold United Tribes to just 34.5 percent including 0-7 on three-point attempts.

A much better defensive, and offensive, effort in the second half proved to be the difference, as Anoka-Ramsey went on an early run to claim a double-digit lead they wouldn't relinquish.

Anoka-Ramsey shot a blistering 54.8 percent in the second half to finish at 45.2 percent.  They still held United Tribes to only 34.6 percent in the second half and forced 23 turnovers for the game.  United Tribes also shot just 1-15 from the three-point line.

Anoka-Ramsey held a 43-38 edge in rebounds but shot a season-low 38.5 percent from the free throw line (10-26).

Balanced scoring was a key for Anoka-Ramsey.

Jimmy Sauser came off the bench to score a career-high 14 points including 4-9 from the three-point line.  Sauser also contributed four rebounds, three on the offensive end.

Lemuel Doe was the only other Golden Ram in double figures with 11 points.  Corey Barrett and David Hicks each chipped in nine points.  Michael Stephens finished with eight.  Antone Darrington and Lucas Barraud finished with six apiece.

North Dakota State College of Science

The Golden Rams faced a big challenge as the NDSCS Wildcats came into the game with a 15-1 record and a #18 ranking in the latest NJCAA Division I poll.

In a game that saw neither side have more than a seven point advantage, the Golden Rams were able to outlast NDSCS in the end.

Similar to the game versus United Tribes, both teams came out of the gate a little sluggish.  Despite the 41-37 NDSCS advantage at the break, Anoka-Ramsey shot only 38.2 percent in the first half, while the Wildcats shot 41.9 percent.

The Golden Rams weren't able to make up much ground in the second half as NDSCS continued to maintain a fout to six point lead for the first 14 minutes.

With about six minutes remaining, the Golden Rams switched to a zone defense.  On the Wildcats' first possession against the zone, Tommy Woolridge hit a three-point shot while being fouled and converted the four-point play.  However, the Golden Rams remained in the zone, stalling the Wildcat offense for a large portion of the last six minutes.

Big shots were made by both sides in the final three minutes with Anoka-Ramsey finally taking a lead on a three-point shot by J.J. Butler.  NDSCS answered right back and the teams exchanged the lead multiple times in the final minutes.

Anoka-Ramsey took the lead 82-81 with about a minute left and converted a defensive stop with about 40 seconds remaining.

The Golden Rams used a timeout with 20 seconds left to set up one final score, but Michael Stephens was fouled on the inbound pass and went to the free throw line with 18 seconds remaining looking to extend the Golden Rams 82-81 lead.

Both of Stephens free throw attempts rimmed out.  NDSCS ran the clock down and Woolridge missed a contested go ahead three point shot from the top of the key as time expired, preserving the win for Anoka-Ramsey.

Once again, the Golden Rams found a way to take, and make, easier shots in the second half, shooting 57.1 percent to finish the game at 46.8 percent.  They also converted 18 of 29 free throw attempts, improving greatly on the previous nights performance.

NDSCS was held to an identical 41.9 percent shooting again in the second half.

The Golden Rams were led by Lemuel Doe with 23 points on 9-13 from the field.  J.J. Butler finished with 16 points including 4-6 from the three-point line.

Corey Barrett came up big off the bench with 14 points, six rebounds, and three blocked shots.

Chris Harmon scored 11 points on 3-6 shooting and 5-7 from the free throw line.  Harmon also recorded eight rebounds, five on the offensive end.

The Golden Rams now enter MCAC Southern Division play with a 10-3 record.  They will go on the road for their first conference game at Riverland on Wednesday, January 11 at 8:00pm.
