Game Story: Defense Propels Team to Win

Defense was the key for the Anoka-Ramsey Community College Men's Basketball team in their defeat of host Milwaukee Area Technical College on Saturday afternoon, 70-61.

In a game that had both teams put up large runs, the Golden Rams were able to string together late defensive stops to pull away.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair with neither team able to gain control.  Anoka-Ramsey entered the halftime break with a 33-31 lead thanks to a strong start by Montez Wilkerson who scored 11 of the Golden Rams' first 14 points with three three-point field goals, continuing his hot shooting from the previous night.

The Golden Rams put together a 8-0 run to start the second half taking their first double-digit lead at 41-31.  However, Milwaukee immediately countered with a 13-0 run of their own to take a 44-41 lead.

From there it was again back-and-forth until a late switch to zone defense enabled the Golden Rams to stifle the inside scoring of Milwaukee and pull away.

The Golden Rams held Milwaukee to just 38.3% shooting on the night including 31.8% from the three-point line.  Anoka-Ramsey also forced 25 turnovers including 10 steals and outrebounded the Stormers 48-38 on the night.

Wilkerson led Anoka-Ramsey with 24 points on 5-11 shooting from the three-point line.  Wilkerson also had a game-high nine rebounds.

Henry Breedlove scored nine points on 2-2 from the field and 5-7 from the free throw line to go with seven rebounds.

Lucas Barraud tallied six points, six rebounds, and four assists.

All 13 players who played scored at least one point for the Golden Rams.

Anoka-Ramsey improves to 2-0 on the season.  Next up is the first home game of the season on Tuesday, November 20th at 6:00pm vs. Quakerdale Prep.
