Game Story: Golden Rams Improve to 8-3

The Anoka-Ramsey Community College Men's Basketball team held on to defeat Vermilion Community College on Saturday 74-69 and improve to 8-3 on the season.

A close game throughout, the Golden Rams took a 35-33 lead into halftime on the strength of solid defense and rebounding.

The second half was similar to the first with the two teams exchanging leads multiple times before Anoka-Ramsey staged a late run and hit their free-throws down the stretch.

Both teams struggled shooting the basketball for most of the game, combining to shoot 8-35 on three point field goals.  The Golden Rams held Vermilion to 35.3% shooting, a season-low for an Anoka-Ramsey opponent.

In their previous meeting a week earlier, Vermilion outrebounded Anoka-Ramsey by 24, however a concerted effort to limit second chances helped Anoka-Ramsey come away with the victory as they won the rebounding battle 46-41.

Anoka-Ramsey had a season-high five players score in double figures with Trey Scott leading the way with 14 points followed by Ben Hill (12 points), Dan Konz (12 points, 13 rebounds), Matt Fridberg (11 points, 7 rebounds), and Richard Harmon (10 points).

The Golden Rams will be in action December 29 and 30 as they host the Anoka-Ramsey Holiday Classic.  They'll face United Tribes (ND) on December 29 at 8:00pm, then Mesabi on December 30 at 6:00pm.

Game Story: Golden Rams Defeat Bismarck 80-72

The Anoka-Ramsey Community College Men's Basketball team won their second straight game on Friday night, defeating Bismarck State College 80-72.

A back-and-forth affair in the first half, the Golden Rams put together a couple of second half runs to pull away from the Mystics.  After the first 20 minutes, the Golden Rams held a 38-36 lead on the strength of 11 forced turnovers and a 9-2 edge in offensive rebounds resulting in 11 more shot attempts than Bismarck.

The second half started slowly for Anoka-Ramsey as Bismarck took a 54-49 lead.  An increased defensive effort, especially guarding the three-point line, helped keep Bismarck in check while Trey Scott took over the offense for the Golden Rams.  Scott scored 25 of his game-high 35 points in the second half on an array of threes, pull up jumpers and drives to the basket.

The Golden Rams held Bismarck to 36.7% shooting in the second half, 40.7% for the game while forcing 20 turnovers.  Anoka-Ramsey only shot 41.6% from the field but hauled in 18 offensive rebounds to offset the poor shooting.

Scott finished the game 14-22 from the field including 5-9 from the three-point line.  Richard Harmon led the Golden Rams rebounding effort with a career high 10 to go along with seven points.  Matt Fridberg tallied nine points and seven rebounds.

In the first half, Anoka-Ramsey shot 48.4% from the field including 7-15 from the three-point line while holding Mesabi to 34.3% shooting.

The first part of the second half saw the Golden Rams go cold from the field as they only managed eight points in the first ten minutes, allowing Mesabi to take the lead.  Some clutch shooting by sophomore Jamar Franks kept the Golden Rams in the game as Franks connected on four three's in the last eight minutes.  The Anoka-Ramsey defense picked up late in the game as they only allowed two Mesabi points in the last four minutes of the game.

Anoka-Ramsey finished the game shooting 41.7% from the field including 11-28 from three (39.3%).  The Golden Rams held a big edge in free throws as they connected on 16-21 attempts compared to Mesabi's 2-4 on the night.  Mesabi also committed 21 turnovers, 12 of which were steals by the Golden Rams.

Vermilion extended their lead to 12 at 64-52, but the Golden Rams staged an impressive comeback to take the lead 77-76 on a backdoor layup by Jamar Franks with 12 seconds remaining.  Vermilion elected to not call a timeout and hit a runner in the lane with 4.8 seconds remaining to regain the lead 78-77.

After a couple timeouts, the Golden Rams had one final chance, but were unable to get a shot up, even though they got the ball within five feet of the basket.

Trey Scott lead all scorers with 26 points on 11-14 shooting, including three three's.  Franks finished the game with 15 points on 7-13 shooting.  Dan Konz and Matt Fridberg each chipped in with eight points.

Game Story: Second Half Flurry Leads to 83-67 Victory for Men’s Basketball Team

In a tale of two halves, the Anoka-Ramsey Men’s Basketball team used an incredible second half defensive performance to defeat North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) 83-67 on Monday night, avenging an earlier loss to the Trojans.
The Golden Rams opened the game with a slow start on both ends of the floor allowing NIACC to shoot 61.5% from the field in the first half while only managing 40.5% themselves.  However, thanks to forcing 15 NIACC turnovers, the Golden Rams only trailed 41-34 at the break.
The second half was a different story.
Anoka-Ramsey began the period with a 12-0 run to take a 46-41 lead five minutes into the half and never looked back.  The performance continued as the Golden Rams picked up their pressure on the defensive end, not allowing NIACC to get many clean looks at the basket.  Anoka-Ramsey forced 16 turnovers in the second half, many of which were steals that led to fast break layups.  The Trojans shot 29.6% in the second period including 1 for 8 from the three point line.  Meanwhile, the Golden Rams shot 50% (17-34) including 35.7% on three’s (5-14) and 71.4% from the FT line (10-14) in the half.
For the game, Anoka-Ramsey forced 31 turnovers, 25 of which were steals, while only committing 14 turnovers themselves.  The Golden Rams were 9-28 (32.1%) from the three-point line and 32-71 overall (45.1%) from the field.

Game Story: Golden Rams Defeat Western Tech 84-78

The Anoka-Ramsey Men’s Basketball team, fueled by a strong first half, held on to defeat Western Technical College (La Crosse, WI) 84-78 on Saturday afternoon.  The Golden Rams opened an early 24-8 lead on the Cavaliers before Western Tech began chipping away.  Anoka-Ramsey led 37-26 at halftime by shooting 46.4 percent in the first half and holding Western Tech to 27 percent shooting.  The Golden Rams also held a 25-20 advantage in rebounds.

During a hard-fought second half, Anoka-Ramsey was able to extend the lead to 15 points.  But a lack of rebounding allowed Western Tech to get back in the game.  Anoka-Ramsey was outrebounded 21-15 in the second half with Western Tech hauling in 15 offensive rebounds in the period.  Clutch free-throw shooting down the stretch allowed the Golden Rams to hold off a late rally.

Anoka-Ramsey shot a blistering 16-26 from the field in the second half to finish the game at a season-high 53.7 percent including 12-22 from the three point line (54.5 percent).  They also held Western Tech to just 36.7 percent shooting for the game.

Game Story: Golden Rams Drop 2nd Straight

The Anoka-Ramsey Community College Men's Basketball team lost their second straight game on Saturday night, 72-57 to NIACC.  A strong start to the game resulted in an early 10 point lead for the Golden Rams.  However, an offensive dry spell mid-way through the half allowed NIACC to take the lead which they held into halftime 31-29.

The second half proved to be much of the same, as Anoka-Ramsey was never able to get anything going on the offensive end.  Turnovers plagued the Golden Rams throughout the game, as they finished with 25 for the game, many of which resulted in fast-break layups for NIACC.

Anoka-Ramsey was led in scoring by Trey Scott for the third straight game as he finished with 13 points.  Jamar Franks scored 12 points, while Dan Konz and BJ Asberry came off the bench to each score 8 points.  Asberry also led the Golden Rams with 7 rebounds, 5 on the offensive end.

Game Story: Golden Rams Fall 85-76 to Ellsworth

The Anoka-Ramsey Men's Basketball team dropped their first game of season 85-76 to the NJCAA Division II Ellsworth College Panthers on Friday afternoon in the Konigsmark Klassic on the campus of North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC).  Fueled by a strong start defensively, the Golden Rams built an early double-digit lead, but the Panthers chipped away to take a four point lead with just under a minute left in the first half.  A buzzer-beating 3-pointer from Trey Scott cut the deficit to one 34-33 at halftime.  Scott hit four 3's in the first half and led all scorers at the break with 16 points.

A slow start to the second half doomed the Golden Rams, as Ellsworth extended their lead to as much as 14.  Anoka-Ramsey fought back behind better defense to cut the deficit to four on numerous occasions but could not get any closer.

Free throws proved to be the difference in the game as Ellsworth shot 36-49 from the line compared to Anoka-Ramsey's 7-17.  The Golden Rams were also out-rebounded 41-30.

The team was led by Trey Scott's 22 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 steals.  Jamar Franks chipped in with 16 points and 5 assists, while freshman Jonathan Conner knocked down four 3's to finish with 15 points.  Deshawn Thurman had another strong performance with 8 points and 8 rebounds.
