Game Recap: Golden Rams Win Sixth Straight

The Anoka-Ramsey Community College Men's Basketball team received their first national ranking of the season earlier in the week, coming in at #10.  They lived up to the ranking by first defeating Bismarck State on Friday 111-83, then defeating Vermilion Community College 94-87 on Saturday.

The Golden Rams are now 10-1 on the season entering their holiday break.

The Vermilion game started tight right from the beginning as neither team could gain a sizable advantage and traded leads five teams in the first five minutes of action.

Anoka-Ramsey was able to string together a run and entered halftime with a 49-44 lead.

The Golden Rams were able to extend the lead to as many as 16 in the second half at 68-52 before Vermilion clawed their way back into the game.

Still leading by double digits with just over a minute to play, the Golden Rams missed some free throws, had some costly turnovers, and gave up offensive rebounds to allow Vermilion to pull within three points with less than 30 seconds remaining.

After inbounding the ball against pressure, Anthony Brama tossed a full-length pass to Trent Pollard who made an acrobatic catch and finished the drive and layup to extend the lead to five, with Anoka-Ramsey hanging on from there.

The Golden Rams shot 49.3% for the game while holding Vermilion to 43%.

Anoka-Ramsey made nine three-point shots to Vermilion's seven and were out-rebounded by the Ironmen 44-43.

Joey Weldon lead the charge with 22 points and 18 rebounds while shooting 10 of 11 from the field.

Trent Pollard and Joe Lyons each scored 16 points with Lemuel Doe chipping in 14 and Chris Kpahn 11 to round out the double figure scorers.

Both Pollard and Doe had team-high six assists.

Anoka-Ramsey will next be in action at home on January 3rd and 4th as they'll host the ARCC Holiday Classic.

On January 3rd the Golden Rams will face Dakota County Technical College at 7:00pm.  The two teams squared off earlier in the season with Anoka-Ramsey prevailing 64-51.

On January 4th Anoka-Ramsey will try to avenge their previous loss to North Dakota State College of Science at 5:00pm.  NDSCS defeated the Golden Rams 85-78 back on November 23.

Game Recap: Hot Shooting Leads Golden Rams to Victory

The Anoka-Ramsey Community College Men's Basketball team rode some hot shooting over 40 minutes to defeat Bismarck State College 111-83 on Friday night.

The Golden Rams scored on their first five possessions, three of them with three-point field goals, to open an early lead and never look back.

Anoka-Ramsey lead 51-39 at halftime by shooting 52.8% from the field including 8 of 18 (44.4%) from the three-point line.  Bismarck made seven three-point shots in the half on 19 attempts but managed just 42.1% overall.

The second half started much like the first with Anoka-Ramsey controlling the offense while limiting Bismarck to mostly shots from behind the arc.

The lead grew to as many as 33 (100-67) as the Golden Rams shot 66.7% (22-33) in the second half.

For the game, Anoka-Ramsey shot a blistering 59.4% including 53.1% from the three-point line; making a season-high 17 three-point field goals.

Trent Pollard lead the scoring with 26 points on 8 of 12 shooting and 5 of 8 from the three-point line.  He also dished out five assists.

Joe Lyons scored 25 points on 9 of 13 shooting and 7 of 11 on threes.

Lemuel Doe scored 23 points on 8 of 12 shooting while handing out seven assists.

Joey Weldon scored 19 points making 9 of 10 field goals to go with a game-high 15 rebounds.

Anthony Brama came off the bench to haul in a season-high nine rebounds.

The Golden Rams (entering the weekend ranked 10th in the nation) are now 9-1 on the season.

Anoka-Ramsey will face Vermilion Community College on Saturday at 5:00pm.

Golden Rams Ranked 10th in Latest NJCAA Poll

The Anoka-Ramsey Community College Men's Basketball team is ranked 10th in the nation for NJCAA Division III colleges.

The ranking comes on the heels of Anoka-Ramsey's four game winning streak and 8-1 overall record.

The Golden Rams only loss is to NJCAA Division I member North Dakota State College of Science by seven points on the road.

This is the first national ranking for Anoka-Ramsey since appearing at #7 in the first poll of the 2012-2013 season.

Pollard Named Southern Division Player of the Week

Anoka-Ramsey Community College Men's Basketball player Trent Pollard (Fr, Prairie Seeds Academy) was named the MCAC Southern Division Player of the Week for his efforts in two Golden Ram victories last weekend.

Against Hibbing Community College Pollard finished with 27 points on 7 of 14 shooting from the field, 3 of 7 from the three-point line, and making 10 of 12 free throws.  He also dished out seven assists to go with four rebounds as the Golden Rams won 94-84.

Against Rainy River Community College Pollard scored a game-high 24 points on 8 of 13 shooting from the field, 5 of 8 from the three-point line, and making 3 of 4 free throws.  Anoka-Ramsey won 97-80.

For the weekend he averaged 25.5 points and 4.5 assists while shooting 55% overall and 53% from the three-point line.

Trent is currently averaging 19.7 points and 3.6 assists on the season while shooting 42.5% from the three-point line and 84% from the free throw line.

Anoka-Ramsey is 8-1 and will host the ARCC Classic on December 20 and 21, playing host to Bismarck State College on Friday at 8 pm and Vermilion Community College on Saturday at 5 pm.

Game Recap: Golden Rams defeat Rainy River

The Anoka-Ramsey Community College Men's Basketball team completed their weekend sweep with a convincing 97-80 victory over Rainy River Community College.

The Golden Rams opened up a 20 point lead early in the game and Rainy River never threatened thereafter. 

Anoka-Ramsey lead 59-30 at halftime behind 73.3% shooting, missing just eight shots in the half while holding Rainy River to 29.7%. 

The Golden Rams extended their lead to 38 points at 84-46 with nine minutes remaining and held on from there. 

Four Golden Rams scored in double figures; Trent Pollard (24), Joe Lyons (17), Lemuel Doe (11), and Brandon Johnson (10).

Anthony Brama pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.

Anoka-Ramsey finished the game shooting 54.6% and held a 47-29 edge in rebounds. 

The Golden Rams bring their 8-1 record back home for the ARCC Classic vs Bismarck on December 20 and Vermilion on December 21. 

Game Recap: Golden Rams defeat Hibbing 94-84

The Anoka-Ramsey Community College Men's Basketball team improved to 7-1 on the season with a 94-84 road victory over Hibbing Community College on Friday night.

The Golden Rams jumped out to an early 16-6 lead on the Cardinals behind hot three-point shooting from Trent Pollard and Lemuel Doe.

The lead was extended to 31-13 with Anoka-Ramsey scoring inside, outside, and in transition.

From there the game was played evenly for much of the night with Hibbing trimming the deficit to 44-31 on a buzzer-beating 35 foot shot before halftime.

The Golden Ram lead remained around ten points during the second half before a 11-4 run by Hibbing cut the score to 72-67 with six minutes remaining.

After a timeout, Chris Kpahn hit a corner three-point shot followed by Chris Byrgiotis tracking down a long defensive rebound and finding Joey Weldon for a layup in transition to push the lead back to ten with 5:30 to play.

The lead was extended back to 13 at 84-71 with 3:45 left in the game.

Joey Weldon lead Anoka-Ramsey with 31 points on 11 of 16 shooting while hauling in 21 rebounds, his second straight game with over 20 boards.

Trent Pollard scored 27 points on 7 of 14 shooting and making 10 of 12 free throws to go with seven assists.

Lemuel Doe finished with 17 points knocking down all four of his three-point attempts.

Anthony Brama came off the bench and pulled in a season-high eight rebounds; and Joe Lyons chipped in five assists.

Anoka-Ramsey will face Rainy River Community College on Saturday afternoon in International Falls.

Weldon Named NJCAA D3 National Player of the Week

Anoka-Ramsey Community College Men's Basketball player Joey Weldon was named the NJCAA Division III National Player of Week this past Wednesday for his efforts in games December 6th and 7th.

Joey averaged 17.5 points and 19.5 rebounds in two Golden Ram wins while shooting over 70% from the field.

This included a 20 point,13 rebound game vs. Northland and a 15 point, 26 rebound game vs. Itasca.

Joey is the first player to earn National Player of the Week honors under head coach Ron Larson.

Weldon was also named the MCAC Southern Division Player of the Week.

Anoka-Ramsey is 6-1 on the season and will travel to Hibbing Community College on December 13, and Rainy River Community College on December 14.

Joey Weldon Named MCAC Southern Division Player of the Week

Anoka-Ramsey Community College Men's Basketball player Joey Weldon (Fr, St. Paul) was named the MCAC Southern Division Co-Player of the Week for his efforts in two Golden Ram victories December 6th and 7th.

On December 6th Weldon scored 20 points and pulled in 13 rebounds, playing just 18 minutes, in the Golden Rams win over Northland Community and Technical College.

On December 7th he recored 15 points and 26 rebounds vs. Itasca Community College.

For the two games Weldon averaged 17.5 points and 19.5 rebounds while shooting 14-18 from the field.

Weldon currently leads the MCAC in field goal percentage (70.8%) and rebounds per game (13.6).  Both marks rank 2nd nationally for NJCAA Division III schools.

The Golden Rams are 6-1 on the season and travel to Hibbing Community College and Rainy River Community College this coming weekend.

Game Recaps: Golden Rams Sweep Weekend Games

The Anoka-Ramsey Community College Men's Basketball team completed a sweep of MCAC Northern Division opponents Northland Community and Technical College, and Itasca Community College.

On Friday night, the Golden Rams defeated Northland 91-66 after building a 55-25 halftime lead.

Anoka-Ramsey held Northland to just 31% shooting in the first half while connecting on 55.6% of their own field goals to gain the 30-point lead.

The Golden Rams were able to maintain their lead throughout the second half, eventually taking their largest lead at 75-40 with nine minutes left to play.  Northland was unable to get the deficit under 22 the rest of the game.

Anoka-Ramsey shot 48.6% for the game including 11 of 26 from the three-point line, and committed just eight turnovers.  Northland shot 41.9% for the game and turned the ball over 15 times.

Joey Weldon lead the Golden Rams with 20 points and 13 rebounds which was his second consecutive 20/10 game.

Trent Pollard finished with 15 points and Joe Lyons had 13 points.

Lemuel Doe scored ten points to go with six assists and Anthony Brama tallied ten points and four assists.

On Saturday afternoon against Itasca, the Golden Rams struggled shooting the basketball in the first half and committed 12 first half turnovers to allow Itasca to keep the game close.  Anoka-Ramsey lead 23-16 at the break with the Golden Rams shooting 34.5% and Itasca only connecting on 7 of 36 field goal attempts (19.4%).

The second half saw a much better offensive performance from Anoka-Ramsey as they only had five turnovers and shot 50% from the field.  Itasca again struggled to find the basket, shooting just 29.4% to finish 17 of 70 from the field overall (24.3%).

Joey Weldon recorded his sixth double-double in seven games with 15 points and an astounding 26 rebounds, seven on the offensive end.

Lemuel Doe lead the Golden Rams in scoring with 20 points on 11 of 13 shooting from the free throw line to go with three assists and two steals.

Trent Pollard scored 12 points and pulled in five rebounds while dishing out five assists.

Anoka-Ramsey is now 6-1 on the season.

They will travel to Hibbing Community College on Friday, December 13th for an 8:00pm game, then head to Rainy River Community College on Saturday, December 14th for a 3:00pm game.
