The Anoka-Ramsey Community College Men's Basketball team received their first national ranking of the season earlier in the week, coming in at #10. They lived up to the ranking by first defeating Bismarck State on Friday 111-83, then defeating Vermilion Community College 94-87 on Saturday.
The Golden Rams are now 10-1 on the season entering their holiday break.
The Vermilion game started tight right from the beginning as neither team could gain a sizable advantage and traded leads five teams in the first five minutes of action.
Anoka-Ramsey was able to string together a run and entered halftime with a 49-44 lead.
The Golden Rams were able to extend the lead to as many as 16 in the second half at 68-52 before Vermilion clawed their way back into the game.
Still leading by double digits with just over a minute to play, the Golden Rams missed some free throws, had some costly turnovers, and gave up offensive rebounds to allow Vermilion to pull within three points with less than 30 seconds remaining.
After inbounding the ball against pressure, Anthony Brama tossed a full-length pass to Trent Pollard who made an acrobatic catch and finished the drive and layup to extend the lead to five, with Anoka-Ramsey hanging on from there.
The Golden Rams shot 49.3% for the game while holding Vermilion to 43%.
Anoka-Ramsey made nine three-point shots to Vermilion's seven and were out-rebounded by the Ironmen 44-43.
Joey Weldon lead the charge with 22 points and 18 rebounds while shooting 10 of 11 from the field.
Trent Pollard and Joe Lyons each scored 16 points with Lemuel Doe chipping in 14 and Chris Kpahn 11 to round out the double figure scorers.
Both Pollard and Doe had team-high six assists.
Anoka-Ramsey will next be in action at home on January 3rd and 4th as they'll host the ARCC Holiday Classic.
On January 3rd the Golden Rams will face Dakota County Technical College at 7:00pm. The two teams squared off earlier in the season with Anoka-Ramsey prevailing 64-51.
On January 4th Anoka-Ramsey will try to avenge their previous loss to North Dakota State College of Science at 5:00pm. NDSCS defeated the Golden Rams 85-78 back on November 23.
