Game Story: Big Second Half Leads to 76-58 Win

The Anoka-Ramsey Community College Men's Basketball opened up a 22 point lead, 62-40, in the second half to pull away from Ridgewater College 76-58 on Saturday afternoon.

After taking a 30-23 lead at the break, thanks to a strong defensive performance, the Golden Rams found their shooting touch in the second half, hitting 19 of their 32 second half attempts (59.4%) including 6 of 10 from the three-point line.

After taking their 62-40 lead with about 10 minutes left in the game, Ridgewater mounted a 9-0 run to trim the deficit to 13, but a couple buckets inside by Matt Fridberg helped Anoka-Ramsey put the game away.

The first half was filled with turnovers and missed shots as both teams turned it over 11 times, while Ridgewater was held to just 27.6% shooting.  The Golden Rams did manage to shoot 50% in the half, but missed a number of open looks around the basket.

The Golden Rams finished the game connecting on 33 of their 60 shots (55%), including 8 of 18 from the three-point line (44.4%).

Trey Scott once again led the Golden Rams in scoring with 28 points on 10 of 18 shooting, and 5 of 10 from three; Scott also chipped in with five rebounds.  He was followed in scoring by Fridberg (10 points), Tyler Salkey (10 points), Richard Harmon (9 points), and Dan Konz (8 points).

Konz and Fridberg led the rebounding effort with seven and six respectively.

Anoka-Ramsey is now 14-7 on the season, 3-4 in the MCAC.  The Golden Rams will take a break from conference action to take on the St. Thomas JV team on Wednesday, February 2nd at 6:30pm on the Coon Rapids campus.

Game Story: Overtime Thriller Ends With Loss

The Anoka-Ramsey Community College Men’s Basketball team lost an overtime thriller 86-83 to the Central Lakes College Raiders on Wednesday night.  Central Lakes entered the game undefeated and ranked #3 in the nation.
A slow start by the Golden Rams allowed CLC to open up an early eight point advantage before Anoka-Ramsey began chipping away with strong defense. 
Central Lakes led 36-32 at halftime despite shooting 36.1% compared to Anoka-Ramsey’s 52%.  The difference was made up by Anoka-Ramsey’s 13 first half turnovers.
The turnover woes continued in the second half as Central Lakes opened the period on a 13-2 run to take a 49-34 lead.  Once again, the Golden Rams picked up their defense and began trimming the deficit.
The teams traded leads throughout the last five minutes with the teams exchanging big shots.
Both teams missed opportunities to win the game in regulation as the score was knotted at 74 apiece.
Central Lakes outlasted Anoka-Ramsey in the overtime period 12-9 as Trey Scott’s last second shot from 30 feet fell short.
The Golden Rams shot 47.5% from the field and 11-21 from the three-point line.  However, their 26 turnovers were too much to overcome.  Central Lakes finished the night shooting 39.5%.
Anoka-Ramsey was led by Scott’s 29 points, with 23 coming after halftime.  Scott was 10-18 from the field including 6-10 from three-point range while also contributing a team-high 11 rebounds and nine steals, narrowly missing a triple-double.
Dan Konz had 20 points, Matt Fridberg chipped in with 12, and Richard Harmon finished with 11 points and six assists.
Anoka-Ramsey drops to 12-6 on the season and 1-3 in the MCAC Southern Division.  Next up is a trip to Worthington, MN to take on Minnesota West on Saturday, January 22nd at 3:00pm.

Game Story: Seven Game Winning Streak Snapped at Riverland

The Anoka-Ramsey Community College Men’s Basketball team had their seven game winning streak snapped on Wednesday night, 88-83 at Riverland Community College. 
It was the Golden Rams first game away from home in over a month.
Riverland jumped out to an early ten point lead just minutes into the game, but the Golden Rams were able to stage a run of their own to even the score about ten minutes into action.  The lead changed hands multiple times in the half, but another late six point run propelled the Golden Rams to a 44-40 halftime lead.
Anoka-Ramsey was able to build a ten point lead early in the second half, but hot shooting by Riverland, combined with some missed opportunities for the Golden Rams, allowed Riverland to climb back into the game and eventually pull out the victory.
The 88 points were the most given up by Anoka-Ramsey this season as Riverland shot 49.2% for the game.
Trey Scott was the leading scorer for the Golden Rams with 19 points followed by Tyler Salkey (14), Richard Harmon (13), and Matt Fridberg (11). 
Harmon also led the Golden Rams with ten rebounds, making it his first double-double of the season.
Anoka-Ramsey falls to 12-4 on the season, 1-1 in the MCAC.  They travel to Fergus Falls on Saturday, January 15th to take on MSCTC-Fergus Falls starting at 3:00pm.

Game Story: Hot Shooting Leads to Big Win

The Anoka-Ramsey Community College Men’s Basketball team knocked down a season-high 14 three-point field goals en route to a 107-80 victory over Western Technical College (WI) on Monday night.
The Golden Rams ran out to an early 18 point lead before a late run by Western cut the margin to ten at halftime, 49-39. 
Western scored the first points of the second half to trim the deficit to eight, but it was all Anoka-Ramsey from there as the Golden Rams picked up their defensive pressure and found open shooters on offense.
Anoka-Ramsey shot 61.9% in the second half including 6 of 8 from the three-point line.  They finished the game shooting 51.3% overall (40-78) including 14 of 23 from behind the arc (60.9%).  The Golden Rams also set a season-high in assists with 24.
Trey Scott led the scoring attack with 30 points on 11 of 15 shooting including a career-high eight three-pointers. 
Dan Konz had an impressive overall game with 20 points, nine rebounds, and five assists.  Jonathan Conner knocked down four threes and finished with 16 points, while Tim Daniels rounded out the double figure scoring with ten points.
Richard Harmon recorded six assists for the second consecutive game.
Anoka-Ramsey has now won seven straight games and 11 of their past 12 with the lone loss coming by one point.  Their overall record improves to 12-3 on the season as they look to pick up their second MCAC Southern Division win on Wednesday, January 12th at Riverland Community College.  Tipoff is set for 8:00pm.

Game Story: Golden Rams Open MCAC Play with 78-60 Win

The Anoka-Ramsey Community College Men’s Basketball team opened MCAC Southern Division play with a 78-60 win over the Ridgewater College Warriors. 
The Golden Rams jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as they opened a 40-18 advantage at halftime behind stifling defense.  The Golden Rams held Ridgewater to 23.3% shooting including 0 for 9 on three point attempts while forcing 14 turnovers in the half.
Ridgewater battled back in the second half but could never get the deficit under 14 points while Anoka-Ramsey continued to force turnovers.  All told, Anoka-Ramsey forced 25 turnovers for the game, 20 of which were steals.
Anoka-Ramsey struggled shooting the ball throughout the game, managing only 40.5%, but made up for it with 20 offensive rebounds.  The Golden Rams won the battle of the boards 49-44, marking the fifth straight game they have out-rebounded their opponent.
Leading the Golden Rams in scoring once again was Trey Scott with 27 points to go along with seven rebounds and four steals.  Dan Konz poured in 15 points on 6 of 11 shooting while adding four rebounds and four steals.  Richard Harmon had a great all-around game with ten points, nine rebounds, six assists, and four steals.  Tyler Salkey chipped in ten points and seven rebounds, while Tim Daniels also recorded seven rebounds on the evening.
The Golden Rams improve to 11-3 on the season; 1-0 in the MCAC Southern Division.  They will briefly step out of MCAC play to take on Western Wisconsin Technical College on Monday, January 10th at 8:00pm on the Coon Rapids campus.  The Golden Rams defeated Western 84-78 back on November 20th.

Game Story: Golden Rams Tally Two Wins

The Anoka-Ramsey Community College Men's Basketball team tallied two wins in the Anoka-Ramsey Holiday Classic on December 29th and 30th.  In Game One, the Golden Rams defeated United Tribes Technical College 104-48, recording season-bests in both points scored and fewest points allowed.

Anoka-Ramsey jumped out to an early lead on the Thunderbirds and never looked back as they built a 55-21 lead at the break behind 56.4% shooting and holding United Tribes to 33.3%.  Trey Scott scored 21 of his game-high 28 points in the first half.  Scott also finished the game with seven steals.

Four other players reached double figures in scoring for Anoka-Ramsey.  Tyler Salkey recorded a season-high 15 points, with Jake Ruhland (14 points), Jonathon Conner (12 points), and Tim Daniels (10 points) all reaching double figures off the bench.  Dan Konz led the Golden Rams with 11 rebounds as Anoka-Ramsey out-rebounded United Tribes 49-30.

In Game Two, Anoka-Ramsey defeated Mesabi 92-67 behind another strong performance on the boards as they held a 47-29 edge including 26-12 on the offensive glass.  Another fast start gave the Golden Rams an early lead capped by a 28 foot, off-balance three-pointer at the halftime buzzer by Ben Hill to give Anoka-Ramsey a 47-32 halftime lead.

The second half proved to be much of the same as Anoka-Ramsey held the sharp-shooting Norseman to only 2-10 from the three-point line in the half and pulled in 13 offensive rebounds (26 for the game).

Trey Scott led the team in scoring with 25 points and nine steals.  Once again, four other scored in double figures.  This time it was Tyler Salkey (14 points), Matt Fridberg (11 points), Dan Konz (10 points), and Ben Hill (10 points).

The Golden Rams also had a balance effort on the glass with four players pulling in at least six rebounds (Konz - 8, Scott - 7, Salkey - 6, Brandon Spears - 6), and five others with at least three.

Anoka-Ramsey improves to 10-3 on the season, matching their win total from last season.  Next up is MCAC Southern Division play as the Golden Rams host Ridgewater College on Wednesday, January 5th at 8:00pm.
